Think Your Way Through John

The first time my husband taught the Gospel of John was to a young adult Sunday School class at Northwest Bible Church in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was a student at Dallas Theological Seminary, so the year was probably 1971. At some point, we decided to make up a poem so we could remember the main content of each chapter.

CHAPTER ONE:    GOD SENT HIS SON.
CHAPTER TWO:    A SPECIAL BREW.
CHAPTER THREE:    NEW LIFE IS FREE!
CHAPTER FOUR:    THIRST NO MORE.
CHAPTER FIVE:    HIS CLAIMS ALL JIVE.
CHAPTER SIX:    A MEAL TO FIX.
CHAPTER SEVEN:    HIS ORIGIN—HEAVEN.
CHAPTER EIGHT:    THE GREAT DEBATE.
CHAPTER NINE:    THE MAN BORN BLIND.
CHAPTER TEN:    OUR SHEPHERD FRIEND.
CHAPTER ELEVEN:    LIFE RE-GIVEN.
CHAPTER TWELVE:    THE KING BEHELD.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN:    KEEPING FEET CLEAN.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN:    FUTURE FORESEEN.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN:    KEEP YOUR BRANCH GREEN.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN:    SPIRIT CONVICTING.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN:    CHRIST OUR GO-BETWEEN.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN:    PILOT’S RATING.
CHAPTER NINETEEN:    JESUS DYING.
CHAPTER TWENTY:    EASTER SUNDAY!
CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE:    PETER’S WORK BEGUN

After teaching the Gospel of John at several Senior Centers, I expanded the poem to reflect further contents.

CHAPTER ONE: GOD SENT HIS SON.    Jesus calls His men.
CHAPTER TWO: A SPECIAL BREW.    Don’t make God’s house a den.
CHAPTER THREE: NEW LIFE IS FREE!    John points to Christ with joy.
CHAPTER FOUR: THIRST NO MORE.    He heals the nobleman’s boy.
CHAPTER FIVE: HIS CLAIMS ALL JIVE.    He heals the invalid man.
CHAPTER SIX: A MEAL TO FIX.    He walks on water like land.
CHAPTER SEVEN: HIS ORIGIN—HEAVEN.    Some believe, and some don’t.
CHAPTER EIGHT: THE GREAT DEBATE.    Accepting Christ—they won’t.
CHAPTER NINE: THE MAN BORN BLIND.    Pharisees are blind too.
CHAPTER TEN: OUR SHEPHERD FRIEND,    giving His life for you.
CHAPTER ELEVEN: LIFE RE-GIVEN.    Sadducees say He must die.
CHAPTER TWELVE: THE KING BEHELD.    First He’ll be crucified.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN: KEEPING FEET CLEAN.    Judas leaves the room.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN: FUTURE FORESEEN.    Comforter will come.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN: KEEP YOUR BRANCH GREEN.    People will be cruel.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN: SPIRIT CONVICTING.    Pray and your joy will be full.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: CHRIST OUR GO-BETWEEN.     Jesus prays for us.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: PILOT’S RATING.    Peter denies with a cuss.
CHAPTER NINETEEN: JESUS DYING.    His body laid to rest.
CHAPTER TWENTY: EASTER SUNDAY!    Thomas convinced and blessed.
CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE: PETER’S WORK BEGUN;    he will feed the sheep.
Now we know who Jesus is and why he came for me.

Feel free to use this when you teach the Gospel of John, compliments of Ken and Marcia Hornok.
